Pension La Gaite は Champs de Mars に接する Rue Capois に面して立つ Hotel Le Plaza の横を入った Avenue Ducoste No.5 にある下宿屋兼安宿で、1階は年金生活の年寄り、が数人、2階は大家の家族と2人のOL、小学校教員、家族と離れてフランスの大学への学位論文を執筆中の内務省の役人、彼らすべて肌の黒いハイチ人で、それにフランス人ビジネスマン、さらに日本人が加わったのであった。
Champs de Mars は今回の地震で倒壊した大統領府にも接する大きな公園で、かき氷やピスタシュ・砂糖黍売りの商人が常駐し、子供ばかりでなくドミノなどに打ち興ずる大人たちにとっても憩いの場であり、特に日曜日には、公園の中心にある野外音楽堂でいろいろなジャンルの音楽が演奏され、教会帰りのドレスアップした姿でのそぞろ歩きの人々でいっそうの賑わいを示していた。
Rue Capois のChamps de Mars に接する もっとも新しい映画館 Triomphe、Hotel Le Plaza 、イスパノ・アメリカ文化センター、 Rex 劇場、Park Hotel,、フランス大使館、ハイチ美術館のほか、レストラン、薬局、お洒落なドラッグストアなどが立ち並び、商業地区ではないが都心に近い集客地区であった。 ハイチ滞在の主目的であった民族学部の建物も Champs de Mars の反対側にあったし、Rex劇場では当時スターだったLanguichatteの軽演劇や映画『マルチニックの少年』を観たり、アメリカ合衆国によるJ．S．Alexezに関する講演で質問するハイチ人著作家 Roger gaillard の姿を見たのもイスパノ・アメリカ文化センターだった。
