ポルトープランスの思い出（３）：新旧カテドラル ― 2010/01/25 23:24
これまで述べてきたように、ハイチ、ポルトープランスのでの生活は退屈する暇など全くない毎日の連続であった。細かなエピソードについてはおいおいと語っていきたいが、大地震と関連した話題に戻ろう。
地震のニュースとして送られてくる映像の中で大きな衝撃を受けた映像の一つに、前面だけを残して後はすっかり倒壊したカテドラルの写真があった。というのはポルト^プランスの大聖堂の悲劇は、ここ30年の間において2度目のことなのである。掲載した写真は、上述のハイチのInstitut Francaisが1946年から刊行している"Conjoction"という雑誌の特集号（Nos.188-189. Special:Ancienne Cathedrale de Port-au-Prince ISPAN / ICOMOS-Haiti）からの借用であるが、新旧カテドラルが仲良く一つの写真に収まっている。この特集号はもともと旧カテドラルの修復のために世界の建築遺産の保護を目的とする国際機関であるICOMOSのハイチ国内委員会が行った調査報告書を兼ねていた。ところがこの特集号が印刷中の1991年1月7日、何者かの放った火によって灰燼に化してしまったのである。そして2010年の1月12日、ハイチ人は新カテドラルもまた失ってしまったのである。
